Raku pottery is beautiful and spontaneous. All my Raku pottery is hand thrown and/or hand carved. Decorated with beautiful metallic, matte and crackle glazes, raku pottery makes a wonderful and unique gift. My Raku pottery is intended for decorative uses only. They are not designed or safe for use with food. Raku pottery is not dishwasher safe and should be handled with care. CLICK HERE to learn about the Raku process. Raku Luminarias These are hand thrown Raku pots with open bottoms and they sit on a base to allow easy access to the candle or night light. When the clay is leather hard I carve them with flowing patterns that will cast beautiful, changing patterns on your walls and ceilings.

The Raku process is exciting and spontaneous. After the pot has been bisque fired, it is glazed and fired to a temperature of around 1800f in a propane-fired raku kiln. It takes about a 30 minutes to reach temperature. It is removed from the raku kiln with specially designed tongs, while it is still glowing hot, and placed in a metal can filled with combustible materials. The heat from the pot ignites the material and the can is immediately sealed. The fire quickly uses all the oxygen in the can and draws it from the pot and metal rich raku glaze. This is called "post fire reduction" Reduction is what causes the wonderfully unique, unpredictable and spontaneous patterns of color and metallic lustres unique to raku. After 15 minutes or so in the reduction can, the pot is removed and dunked in water to "freeze" the shifting patterns. Protective clothing, gloves and eye protection are worn when handling the hot raku pots. The clay used for raku is specially designed to withstand thermal shock, most other clays would crack under the drastic temperature change.
